30th Oct Cromer Crew Honour Walter Allen
Today members of the volunteer Lifeboat Crew travelled out to Hammond Knoll to pay their respects to Edward Walter Allen, who tragically lost his life 70 years ago in the English Trader rescue.
Coxswain John Davies and crew took out a commemorative wreath and a glass jar donated by the Henry Blogg Museum which contained stones from Cromer beach, six ha'pennies to represent the six lives lost, and a 2011 coin to mark the 70th Anniversary of the rescue.
Crew lined up along the boat and after the items were placed carefully into the sea, the crew stood silent with their thoughts and prayers. Indeed some of the crew had relatives aboard the boat all those years ago, and all felt privileged to be able to pay their respects on behalf of all the lifeboat crew and volunteers ashore.
It is at times like this that we all feel proud to work together to save lives at sea and we thank our supporters for enabling us to continue the work our forefathers started over 200 years ago
