Rescued sailor returns after seventy years

Charles Rogers was rescued by the Cromer lifeboat crew in 1941. 70 years on he visited the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum to view the lifeboat that saved his life.

Charles is probably the last living survivor as research and advertising has failed to locate another from the rescue to the English Trader.

Jacqui Palmer RNLI museum manager explains: ‘Charles is now 90 years old but has made the trip from Australia to mark the occasion of his rescue from the English Trader. It was wonderful to meet him in person and show him the lifeboat, HF Bailey which came to his rescue so long ago.’

Charles recalled the incident for an enthralled audience, describing the horrendous conditions and bravery of the crew. Talking of Henry Blogg, Charles said "What a guy..thrown into the water then he took his crew to the hospital saying he would be back at the turn of the tide, and true to his word he came back." Charles also praised the crew of the lifeboats saying "What a marvelous job you did, and are still doing!"

For all who attended it was a privilege to hear first hand a vivid account of the rescue. We all thank Jacqui and her dedicated team who have worked hard to make 2011, the 70th anniversary of the rescue, a poignant and fitting reminder of a remarkable but ultimately tragic episode in Cromer Lifeboats history.
